We are better together

PLACENTIA, Calif. — There are a lot of people surprised by our good start to this year’s football season, but we’re not. That’s not to say we are not having fun with it. We hear things like “Eldo hasn’t been 2-0 since or 3-0 since” and now we sit at 5-2 heading into our conference play. And like any team that is having success the work starts way before the season does and it is not any different for us.

I guess it really started last fall with workouts but no guarantee of a season. So many teams that are successful get there by overcoming some sort of adversity because it brings them together. And that has been true for us. For so many weeks we were putting work in late last fall and into the spring, but not sure if we were going to get a season. However, getting to be around the guys did bring some normalcy and gave us something to look forward to and that time together helped us become closer. In fact, our teammates and coaches were really the only people we were getting to see regularly so it was more than football for us. It was an opportunity to laugh and interact in a way that was needed for many of us. Team sports are about trust and working together towards a common goal and that seems to be easier to do when you are a close team.

And while we did get a brief season in the spring, it really felt like a continuation of our fall practices that led into summer workouts and prepared us well for an early start to our season with a week zero game in August. The other thing that has helped us get off to a good start is the communication with our coaching staff. There were always so many changes to protocol and schedules that communication between the players and coaches had to be really good. The other thing we saw was how hard the coaches all worked to try and give us an opportunity to play and that has brought us closer to our coaching staff.

The start to every season brings high expectations and hope and that was no different for our El Dorado football team this year. However, what felt different was the closeness this team had heading into week zero and our confidence in one another. We are now focused on finishing strong in conference play with CIF goals too – and that would be a great finish to a long road with a group of guys that have grown closer together through adversity.
