Austin Hunt new men’s and women’s tennis coach of Hope College

HOLLAND, Mich. – The former assistant coach of the Grand Valley State University is now the 13th men’s coach for Hope men tennis team and 15th women’s coach for the Flying Dutch.

Austin Hunt comes as the new coach after former coach Bob Cawood stepped down from coaching the Flying Dutch after an impressive four-year period. The Hope College women’s team continued the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association record title run by winning the MIAA regular season and the tournament titles in 2018, 2019, 2021 under Cadwood’s watch (it’s worth notice that the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic).

Hope College has won consecutive MIAA Tournament championships along with six MIAA regular season wins which is a league record.

Director of Athletics of Hope College Tim Schoonveld is excited for the signing of Coach Hunt.

“We are so excited to have Austin join our team. He has a passion for coaching and is driven to not only be successful on the court but is committed to helping to impact and transform the lives of student-athletes,” Schoonveld said in a school press release. “He is going to do a great job and will continue to build on the work of Bob Cawood within our programs. We want to welcome Austin and his wife, Kayla, and are excited to see his impact on our campus.”

Coach Hunt was excited himself too to coach the Flying Dutch.

“Hope is an amazing place to bring in top-quality tennis players: the indoor courts, the 12 outdoor courts, the amazing campus, downtown Holland, and Lake Michigan. The school sells itself,” Hunt said in the release. “We have some good recruits coming in; credit to Coach Cawood for that. My wife, Kayla, and I are excited to meet all of our student-athletes and welcome them into our family.”

Hunt also has coaching roots in his family as his brother is the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at New Mexico University. Not just that, but also his father, Mark, and mother, Melissa, are coaching at the Dallas Metropolitan Area High School.

Before starting his mission with the Flying Dutch, Coach Hunt served for two seasons (2018-20) as the assistant tennis coach for McKinney Boyd High School in McKinney, Texas.

Hunt also has a master’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Michigan (2017) along with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Cornerstone University (2016).

Fans are excited to see what Coach Hunt will add to his coaching career and his coming victories with the Flying Dutch.
