SCAD men’s soccer falters in three losses this season

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The men’s soccer team of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has had a topsy-turvy season so far. After getting back-to-back wins at the beginning of the season, the team has slumped to a series of losses and draws.

They have won twice, lost thrice and drawn in five outings so far. Their first loss came against Life University as they fell 1-0 on Sept. 16.

Midfielder Caia Lara had an opportunity to score for SCAD in the first half, but the shot went wide. This was the only clear and on-goal shot that SCAD managed to get throughout the game. While their attackers were below par, the defense also weakened in the second half.

At 55:12, Life University netted the only goal, courtesy of a header by Luciano Diaz. In the 85th minute, the Bees almost conceded another goal by Munich-native Phillip Holtgen. Life had 20 shots, whereas SCAD registered only six. This goes to show the difference between both defenses.

In the second game held two days later, the Bees slumped to another defeat. Georgia Gwinnett’s Diego Milessi buried the ball on top of the inside-left post in the first half. In the second half, Jason Strambu converted the free kick into a goal with ease.

The Bees were considerably better at the back in this matchup as they allowed Georgia Gwinnett to find the target only four times, but the opposition made hay of the handful of chances they got. SCAD managed to have five of nine shots on target, but none of them landed inside the net. Jin Kim took the last chance at the 89:32 mark, but he was denied a consolation goal.

The third loss came up against No. 2 Keiser University at home on Oct. 2. The hosts slumped to a 0-2 loss which showed that their defensive woes are far from over.

The match remained scoreless until the 41st minute when Seahawks’ Rodrigo Montez Silva scored the opener. In the 74th minute, Lucas Jacobs assisted Lucca Carvalho to seal a victory for the visitors.

Last season, the Bees finished with seven wins, five losses and two draws. They overcame tactical errors early in the 2019 season and finished the season on a high note. Things started positively for the Bees in 2021 but took a U-turn when the team bumped into unbeaten sides.

To remain consistent, SCAD will have to work on its back-formation. Their best attacker, Philips Holtgen has scored three times in eight games, followed by Jayden Corbridge’s two goals.

The Bees will be looking to turn things around and boost their record as they continue into the season.
