An insight into Sacramento United Soccer Club

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento United Soccer Club has been growing in stature ever since its establishment in 1911. Recently, it trained teams of over 300 girls and 700 boys over a year program with full access to the Club’s activities, training sessions and clinic. Other activities included the spring, summer, winter and fall playing leagues. With different tournaments and jamborees being hosted by the Club, it provides the platform for children to test and develop their skills both individually and as a team.

Consequently, the Club is able to generate supplemental income for the smooth running of their scholarship program and field development needs. Winter camp was open to all applicants and the Club provided training opportunities at zero cost, majorly on Wednesdays and Fridays, with free outreaches to local soccer clubs by the coaches. Summer team camp was also open at no cost to Sacramento United players.

The coaching staff attend classes as a form of continuous education to maintain the peak general philosophy of the Club at every level. This is aimed at aiding the players’ development by passing through different phases of the Club.

Recently, the coaching staff partnered with Urijah Faber’s Ultimate Fitness and KIME Performance due to the development of a new program. This program is billed to solve the problems related to performance and sport medicine needs. Urijah, Russ Dunning (KIME) and the new staff performance director of Sacramento United, Jonathan Sanburg, launched the special program as part of the upcoming 2021-22 season.

Veo and Sacramento United are teaming up to improve their teams’ video experience. The Club will be utilizing Veo at premier games, along with posting footage on the Sacramento United’s website.

“We are incredibly excited to partner with Veo for Sacramento United’s video needs,” technical director, Gavin Glinton, said. “The Veo cameras and platform will be used to record games and training sessions to create videos that can be shared with our players for analysis and player development and assist with college and professional recruiting highlight videos. We look forward to supporting our teams and players with this partnership.”

Sacramento United is part of the present Capitol Cup, a tournament that spreads over two weeks – one for the boys, the other for the girls. This is to allow the tournament to be hosted in one location at Granite Regional Park’s 16 acres of grass fields. There are on-site vendors, restaurants and hotels and a Friday night check-in for the tournament.

Testament to a job well done is the invitation of coach Yewande Balogun to the Nigeria National Team in recent times. The current UC Davis assistant coach and Sacramento United coach Yewande is set to represent Sacramento United on the international level.

Before her appointment, Yewande spent three seasons as an assistant coach in charge of the goalkeepers at the University of Maryland, where she helped the Terrapins reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament twice in the last decade. She coupled that with an appearance in the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference championship match, adding an All-ACC Academic team and All-Tournament honors to the cabinet. Even as a freshman in 2007, Yewande made the ACC All-Freshman team and was a SoccerBuzz Freshman All-American.

She started 64 games and finished her career as the school’s career leader in goals against average (0.93), made 242 saves and 19 shutouts. At Ottawa Fury in the W-League, she was the leader that powered them to the 2009 league semifinals. In 2011, she helped the Chesapeake to an Open Cup finals appearance in the WPSL and a WPSL regional finals berth. Thus, Sacramento United has a proven performer as a coach within their ranks.

In the past five years, Sacramento United has made it to the top of the California North ranking. They have also attained the second and tenth positions in the Region 4 and National rank, respectively.
