Pace Academy Knights celebrate victory in pursuit of a fifth state championship

ATLANTA — On Oct. 6, Pace Academy’s volleyball team won their home nonconference match against Walker School, 3-0, and honored their seniors Megan Hardesty, Taylor Knowlton, Makenzy Sloan and Julia Holmes.

The 2017 through 2020 State Champions brought out a nearly full house to witness the team’s 20th overall season win, holding an impressive 6-0 region record that places them at No. 1.

The Knights set the pace during the first set with successful aces and kills over the net and into Wolverines midcourt where they dominated offensively. Walker responded with senior Lauren Haynes, a frontcourt advantage for some time, but eventually found trouble at the net with Knights junior Briea Craft and sophomore Gadit Bejar hosting a block party. Keeping up the momentum, the Knights took the first set, 25-13.

Sophomore Grace Agolli led the second set with a serving ace and the Knights continued to defend their territory both offensively and defensively. Fortunately, their backcourt held strong on serve receives where the Wolverines continued to serve, giving the Knights the opportunity to prove their homecourt advantage and repeat their victory, 25-13.

According to head coach Anna Bush, the lineup was altered for this match. It is to no surprise that seniors Hardesty and Knowlton, co-captains, alongside Sloan and Holmes, contributed to the two-set success.

“We changed our lineup a little bit this week, especially because it was our senior night – we wanted to get our seniors in the lineup and I feel like they responded really well to the changes,” Coach Bush said. “Julia has been great for us all year as a middle blocker. It’s been a combination – the leadership that our seniors have shown and the way they have represented our school and community. I’m very proud of them.”
