Bisons move to 3-0 after come-from-behind win over Calgary Dinos

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — After only putting five points on the board and being down by 15 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, things weren’t looking too good for the University of Manitoba Bisons football team. The squad showed resilience and came back, scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Calgary Dinos 28-20.

“To overcome that tremendous momentum, to come back like that, that is one of the best comebacks in the history of the program,” said Bison’s head coach Brian Dobie in an article written by John Gaudes of Bison Sports.

It all started with senior defensive back Stefan Conway, who picked off Calgary’s quarterback Josiah Joseph and was tackled just short of Calgary’s endzone. The Bisons offence took advantage as freshman quarterback Jackson Tachinski threw an easy touchdown to sophomore receiver Kai Madsen, making the score 12-20. The Bisons defence was able to stop the Dinos and make them punt, giving the ball back to the Bisons offence. This drive would have Tachinski faking a handoff and running for 25 yards. The run placed the Bisons in position for Tachinski to throw a touchdown pass to senior Macho Bockru. The Bisons would try to go for two but failed, making the score 18-20. The Bisons defence came up clutch a third time, making the Dinos punt once again and giving the offence a chance to take the lead. The Bisons offence would march down the field and have kicker Cole Sabourin kick a field goal and take the lead 21-20. After back-and-forth drives from both teams and a late touchdown from first-year running back Breydon Stubbs, the Bisons would ultimately come out victorious, winning 28-20.

“We didn’t lose faith, that’s what happened once we got going,” mentioned Bisons head coach Brian Dobie in an article written by Mike Sawatzky.

On Nov. 2, 2019, the Bisons suffered a heartbreaking 47-46 loss to the Dinos in the Canada West conference semi-final game. The Dinos would go on to win the Vanier Cup and become national university football champions.

It is now the halfway point of the season for the Bisons, and they sit at first overall in their conference. Two of their last three games will be on the road. The one game at home should be the Bisons’ toughest matchup as they go up against the second-place Saskatchewan Huskies. Though the Huskies lost their first game of the season to the Dinos, they’ve been on a tear ever since going 2-0 and outscoring their last two opponents by over 25 points. There’s no doubt that this game is circled on the Bisons’ calendar as a must-win to ensure the Bisons land a home playoff game.

“We have the right guys in the building and the right mindset,” concluded quarterback Jackson Tachinski in an article written by John Gaudes of Bison Sports.
