Amanda Maxwell joins Sussex Skylanders coaching staff

NEWTON, N.J. — The Sussex County Community College (SCCC) Softball team named Amanda Maxwell, assistant coach for the 2021-2022 season. Maxwell graduated in 2017 from Warren Hills Regional High School, located in Washington Township, Warren County, N.J.

She was a varsity starter for the softball team during her four years of high school. Maxwell also was named defensive Most Valuable Player (MVP) and received several honors during that time. After graduating, she decided to continue her academic and athletic career at Sussex County Community College.

In her freshman year at Sussex, she was named team co-captain, MVP, Region Player of the Week, and received Academic All American honors. The last is a student-athlete recognition program that chooses an honorary sports team composed of the most outstanding student-athletes from a specific season.

In 2018 Maxwell was named SCCCs Woman of the Year. Although she didn’t even know the award existed at her college, the SCCC Athletic Department selected Maxwell for her academic and athletic performance.

“The day I was told I had a meeting with the Athletic Director (AD). Every coach in the athletic department tricked me. They were all acting like it was something bad. Honestly, I was freaking out all day until I spoke with the AD about it, and when I walked out of his office, all the coaches were laughing at me and saying congratulations. After the roller coaster of emotions calmed down, I felt, and still do feel, extremely honored to receive this nomination and acknowledgment,” Maxwell said.

In her sophomore year, she received three honors: First Team All-Conference, an award where opposing coaches chose student-athletes as the top athletes in their team sport; Second Team All-Region, which recognizes that being the second-team all-region means that you are the second-best at your position in the region; and Academic All American honors. She also received the Athletic Excellence Award from the SCCC athletic department.

Amanda Maxwell was also the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She volunteered with the SCCC Men’s and Women’s soccer teams and filmed Men’s and Women’s basketball in her free time.

2018 head softball coach, AJ Agnor, was the one who recruited Amanda Maxwell. “I attended SCCC because the head coach, AJ Agnor, reached out to me, brought the school to my attention, and spoke with me about the softball program,” Maxwell commented. “His enthusiasm about what he was trying to do with our program was more than enough to draw me into the school,” she added.

“She is constantly picking girls up and helping them out with anything they need. She can play any position on the field. She is the type of player that you wish you would have nine of on the field,” Agnor said of that in 2018. He knew the kind of athlete she was before stopping by the school; that is why he emailed the high school coach back then to talk about how things would work and the opportunity she would have there.

After graduating with her associate’s degree in Liberal Arts in 2019, Amanda Maxwell transferred to North Carolina State University (NC) to continue her studies. She also did a great job in the marketing department at NC State Athletics.

“I’m proud to have Max associated with us in an official capacity. Last year she proved her dedication with being an excellent… coach, so this year was well deserved. She compliments our coaching staff in a way that brings unique leadership to our program.”, the Head Coach of SCCC, Jamie Borger, mentioned. “Aside from her offensive and defensive coaching strategies, she will be supporting recruiting, marketing, and student-athlete academic success,” he added.
