Danielle Schultz: A career in running

ST. LOUIS — It’s been yet another banner week for Webster University Sports.

Four athletes from Webster University were named St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the week in their respective sports for the week of October 11-17.

One runner from the women’s cross country team joined the fray: Danielle Schultz, a junior out of Swansea, Illinois. In Webster’s cross country race on October 15, Schultz had a strong performance. She finished in second place out of 68 total runners, clocking in at 19:40.69, which catapulted the Gorloks to second place in the race.

Schultz has now won the SLIAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week award twice this season, as her time from the event on October 15 ranks sixth in Webster 5K history.

But Schultz is no stranger to collecting cross country accolades. She began her running journey in high school, while attending Belleville East. She was a three-sport athlete, competing in cheerleading and track in addition to cross country.

Schultz finished fifth in the 4×4 relay at the Illinois State Championships. She also was an 800 meters and a 4×8 sectional champion three consecutive years.

But the accomplishments don’t end there. She earned the Hardest Worker Award in her junior year, and also qualified for the Illinois State Track Championships in three straight years.

And she would only continue her greatness once she got to college and joined the Gorloks women’s cross country team. Her freshman year, 2019-20, was arguably her best. She started that year off with a bang by running a personal best 15:47.9 and finishing in 20th place at the WIU Early Bird 4K.

She went on to set another personal record for that year in the Kollege Town Sports Invitational 6K, clocking in at 24:36.9. She later earned herself a spot in the Second Team All-SLIAC when she placed ninth at the SLIAC Cross Country Championships. She would finish third at the NCAA Midwest Regionals with a 24:49.1 time in the 6K.

Schultz continued to run track as well. She competed in five indoor meets during the season. She clocked in at 5:37.05 in the Don DeNoon Invitational mile run, which was a personal best. She would later eclipse that mark at the Indoor Gorilla Classic when she finished with a time of 2:22.80. Schultz also won the SLIAC title in the mile run at the Indoor Championships and was third in the 800 meters race.

And now, with her second Runner of the Week Award this season, Schultz can continue adding to her legacy as a runner in track and cross country. She has already entrenched herself as one of Webster’s best runners, and that is sure to continue with more time.
