October spotlights: Costa Mesa and Estancia HS scholar-athletes

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Each month, the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa recognizes and honors exceptional Scholar-Athletes from Estancia High School and Costa Mesa High School. The award recipients are not only leaders on the field, court, or pool, but also in the classroom. On October 21, 2021, these stellar Scholar-Athletes were honored in a special Kiwanis award ceremony.

Estancia High School

  • Ruby Uchytil (Senior, Volleyball; GPA: 4.2): “Ruby is a not only an incredible volleyball athlete but a true leader on the team. Over the last 4 years coaching Ruby, she has grown into a role model for the girls in our volleyball program to look up to and emulate on and off the court. She is hard working and a compassionate teammate and will continue to find success on her path.” – Coach Alejandro De Mendoza
  • Dane Dodge (Senior, Water Polo; GPA: 4.33): “As a senior this year, Dane has stepped into the leadership role. He’s our Team Captain and overall leader in and out of the pool. He leads by example putting in hard work and always at practice. He’s improved tremendously this year and it’s been a pleasure  coaching him the past 4 seasons.” – Coach Matt Frazier

Lorelei Hobbis (Senior, Volleyball; GPA: 4.5): “Lorelei has been a dominant force on our volleyball team and around the league. She is a leader through her actions and has begun being a vocal leader out on the court. She handled changing positions in stride and it shows the quality player she is to make that difficult switch look so easy. I love how she keeps things light-hearted and fun for the team. It has been such a pleasure coaching Lorelei and we’ll miss her!” – Coach Jillian Rifkin

  • David Calix (Junior, Football; GPA: 3.5): “David gives 110% in everything he does. Even though he is only a junior, he is a leader on the field amongst his peers. David is hard working and committed to the betterment of the program. He is extremely coachable and is eager to make the most of every situation. David is also an extremely talented wrestler and that same work ethic transfers to that sport as well.” – Assistant Principal Jeff Gall
