Justin Lynn has had highs and lows as the Rochester YellowJackets QB

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Justin Lynn is the quarterback for the Rochester Yellowjackets and came all the way from Memphis, Tennessee to Minnesota to play football.

Lynn was more than just an athlete in high school at Cordova High in Memphis. He was a member of the dean’s list and 2019 honor roll while also being named a third team All-American for his efforts on the football field.

Back in Memphis, Lynn comes from a big family as he has six members of his immediate family. Being still just a kid as a current sophomore at Rochester, he enjoys things such as the video game Warzone and getting wings with his friends. Lynn has taken to some other activities to show off his talents as well as he is a good cook and rapper.

He grew up quickly, however, and in 2019 was the quarterback for the Yellowjackets as just a freshman, throwing for 1,764 yards and 21 touchdowns in just nine games. This was good enough to lead the team to six wins with just three losses.

Lynn had to fight for the starting quarterback position with three other first-year players and was third on the depth chart to begin the season. In the first three games, he played but didn’t start and he struggled a bit in that role. Come the fourth game of the season, Lynn was starting. In that game, he threw for an impressive 490 yards with seven touchdowns and was named the National Player of the Week. Lynn was happy about his performance.

“When I first came in, I was kind of in a slump,” Lynn said in an interview with the Post Bulletin. “’Am I good enough to play college football?’ And then came that Vermilion game, my first start, and I had a good game so yeah, it was kind of a confidence booster. But I didn’t let it get to my head.”

This was just the beginning for Lynn.

The next season, in 2020, was a lost year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and no football was played for the Rochester Yellowjackets.

“I told the guys, ‘Full love to the guys who played in 2019 because you guys stuck this thing out,’” Coach Derrick Hintz said in an article with the Post Bulletin coming into this year. “And even the guys who came in 2020 and stuck it out.”

Lynn would have to wait until this season to get back on the field but struggled to get going in his sophomore season. The most passes the quarterback threw in one game was just 21 after throwing 48 passes in his first start as a freshman.

Lynn also only had a high of 138 yards passing in a game compared to 490 in his first start. He split work at quarterback most of the season with Billy Maples.

In the final game of the season for the Yellowjackets, they blew a large lead to fall by just one point to Minnesota West that ended their season.

“How did we blow a 28-8 lead?” Lynn asked after the game.

That is a question that Lynn and all of the Yellowjackets will have to think about until next season.
