Webster University soccer: Men and women continue their dominance

ST. LOUIS — It’s been quite a year for the Webster University soccer program, as both the men’s and women’s teams have had historic seasons.

And neither squad is showing any signs of slowing down. The men’s team won its last regular season game in Elsah, Illinois against the Panthers of Principia College. With the win, the male Gorloks won their fourth straight game, reaching 17 wins on the year and breaking their all-time single season record for wins in the process. The previous record was set back in 1999.

The men’s team came out of the gates hot, winning its first two games. After a 3-1 loss on the road against Washington University, the male Gorloks got themselves back on track, and would not lose any more games for the rest of the regular season. They got on a roll, ultimately winning 11 games in a row. That streak eventually would come to an end, but only by a tie in a game against the Greenville University Panthers on Oct. 18.

Following the tie in Greenville, the men kept the momentum going, which resulted in them clinching their second straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) title and finishing 13-0-1 in SLIAC play.

The women’s team also achieved a major milestone while in Elsah on Saturday. They won their game 3-0 in overtime, finishing the regular season with a 15-3-1 record overall and an 11-2-1 record in SLIAC play.

After dropping their first game against Rose-Holman University in Terre Haute, Indiana by a final score of 2-0, the female Gorloks rebounded and got hot, winning five games in a row. They hit another roadblock in mid-September, dropping two straight to Spalding University and Fontbonne University. But they bounced back again with a 2-1 win in double overtime against Westminster College and would go on to win 10 of their next 11 games while pinning down the second seed in the SLIAC thanks in large part to Jordan Lande, who took home a couple Player of the Week awards in the process.

And now, both teams will get a few days off as they look ahead to their respective tournaments, while also taking time to celebrate their accomplishments from the regular season. But all of that will mean nothing if they don’t keep their momentum alive in the upcoming tournaments. Each team will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 4, as they look to get past the semifinals.

Neither team’s opponent is set at this point, but you can bet that regardless of the matchup, both squads will be ready to go and hungry for more success.
