Here to stay: Coach Jeff Traylor

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The UTSA Roadrunners are one of the six remaining undefeated teams in college football. Read that again. The USTA Roadrunners are one of the six remaining undefeated teams in college football. While yes, their level of competition is not on par with the likes of the undefeated University of Georgia or Oklahoma, eight weeks into the season, the Roadrunners having a perfect record is nothing to discredit. While the college football playoff committee kept them out of their initial rankings this week, that takes nothing away from what the job head coach, Jeff Traylor, has done for the program.

Despite the eight straight wins, UTSA may have had their best moment of the season this past week when they signed head coach Jeff Traylor to a new 10-year contract. The Roadrunners have locked up one of the best young coaches in the nation for the foreseeable future, and the school and coach himself could not be happier.

UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Lisa Campos, spoke about the school getting Traylor to stay on this new long term deal.

“Jeff saw something special at UTSA when he first expressed interest in this job and likewise, we knew we had someone special when we hired him to take over our program,” Campos said. “He is an outstanding leader, a culture builder and a molder of young men. He has brought unprecedented national exposure and acclaim to both our institution and the San Antonio community. He’s taken UTSA football to new heights in a short amount of time, and this contract extension shows our commitment to him and his staff to continue to build and sustain this program for years to come.”

UTSA President, Taylor Eighmy, also spoke on Traylor’s contract extension.

“Our team believes in him, and our students, alumni and fans are excited about the momentum,” Eighmy said. “This moment in time is very special.”

Finally, Traylor himself took to the mic to speak about remaining the coach at UTSA.

“I go back to what I said at my introduction as UTSA’s head football coach in December 2019,” Traylor said. “It will truly take all of us, whether it’s a like, a retweet, buying tickets or a suite, or donating whatever you’re capable of to the university. Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive to Cari and me and our family during our short time in San Antonio. We love our community and we hope this extension demonstrates our commitment to UTSA and San Antonio.”

Traylor’s commitment to UTSA will come as a blow to some other schools who were looking for a new head coach, but for UTSA, they now have their main man for 10 more years. The players love him, the community loves him and, most importantly, he loves the culture he has created at UTSA. With an undefeated season still intact, the Cinderella story of UTSA football seems to just be getting started.
