Saskatoon Sabercats: Bringing their A-game to the 2021-22 season

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan — Saskatoon Sabercats is a hockey team based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. They play in the Saskatchewan AA Hockey League U18.

The last two seasons of the Saskatoon Sabercats in the Center Four Hockey League were crazy ones. It was as though they preferred to lose the same number of games won.

They played 28 games in the League during the 2016-17 season under the team leadership of Noah Lipke as captain and assisted by Trey Vandale, Jamieson Twordik-Sower, and Luke Dyer. They won 13 games and lost 13 games. They were ranked seventh in the regular season and made the playoffs. However, they didn’t go far in the playoffs, as they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

There was not much difference between the 2016-17 season and the 2017-18 season for the Sabercats, except for a reduction in wins and losses. They played 26 games, won 11, and lost 11. Unfortunately, they also made the playoffs and were also eliminated in the quarterfinals–again.

The best season in the League came when they entered the Saskatchewan AA Hockey League in the 2018-19 season. The Saskatoon Sabercats played 33 games in the season, won 19 of those games and lost only 11. They were ranked fourth in the regular season, their best ranking in the league to date. However, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

In the 2019-20 season, the Sabercats couldn’t even make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. They finished 10th in the regular season after recording only 13 wins and 18 losses in 33 games. They could only play two games in the 2020-21 season before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the dominant forces in the Center Four Hockey League is the Broncos. The Broncos were the Champions of the League in both 2015 and 2016.

But when the Sabercats met the Broncos in November of 2019, the Broncos could only take a draw. In the regular time, the teams played 3-3, and even in the overtime, the Broncos could not put another goal past the Sabercats. Three years on, the Broncos have not forgotten this game.

One of the best accomplishments of the Club came in 2016 when they defeated Regina Rangers 3-1 in the finals of the Fred McBeth Midget AA Tournament in Regina. Before this, the Saskatoon Icehawks were the last team to win the Fred McBeth Midget AA Tournament, and that was in 2012.

David Morash was the head coach for the Sabercats during the tournament, and Roger Dauvin was the team’s general manager. The Sabercats still have all it takes to accomplish what they achieved in 2016, and we hope they bring in their A-game in the 2021-22 season.
