Oakville Rangers’ Milan Peters looking to give back in the Himalayas

OAKVILLE, Ontario — Eleven-year-old Oakville resident Milan Peters had a birthday wish: to build and maintain a hockey rink for underprivileged children in the Himalayas.

Being a successful hockey player for the Oakville Rangers, Peters wanted to share his passion for hockey with the kids in Kargil, Himalayas.

Peters became aware of the difficulties that his peers face in Kargil, Himalayas while his family runs an environmental conservation trust there. He addressed the poverty, and the detrimental effects of global warming on the children who don’t get the opportunity to be involved in extracurricular activities, especially sports.

“Kargil is very far away from every place and it is difficult to get around there,” Peters said on his GoFundMe website. “The people who live there are quite poor. Because it is so far away and very cold, it is difficult for the children to go to and from school or even attend after-school activities like sports.”

Peters was determined to do something to improve the quality of the kids’ lives in Kargil. The best way he knew was through sports. As an Oakville Ranger and a passionate hockey fan, he wanted to use his favorite sports to make a change in these kids’ lives. Then, he decided to create a project, the Himalayas Initiative.

“Starting from my birthday this Friday, I am collecting money to build a skating rink in Kargil,” Peters continued on the website. “Instead of buying me a birthday present, I would be very happy if you could donate a small amount to help me build a rink just for the boys and girls of Kargil, where they can go skating whenever they want.”

With the Himalayas Initiative, Peters aspires to create an opportunity for kids to engage in sports and have fun. In the long run, Peters even aims to teach them hockey, his favorite sport.

Peters accomplished reaching the $1,700 CAD threshold after his first set of donations from his classmates. He stated that the budget for building the rink, skating equipment, and maintenance will cost about $7,000 CAD.

“I am going to try to raise much more to build something bigger and more durable,” Peters said. “My goal is to raise the money by Dec. 31, 2021.”

Even though he is determined to take all responsibility for his project, Peters acknowledges the limits of his age and informs the public that his parents will handle the financial side of the project. Furthermore, he said that he will join his mother on her upcoming trip to Kargil to be present in the fieldwork of his project. Peters wishes for the kids in Kargil to have their first skate in the winter of 2022-2023.
