The surge of Wake Forest’s guard Alondes Williams

WAKE FOREST, N.C. — We live in a society that demands to know the truth and wants the inexplicable to be understood. On an individual level, many want justification from the acts and the behavior of people. Defining the reasons and providing comprehensive proof helps ease the concerns that come from the unknown. There are individuals who devote their time and energy trying to explain the anomalies that are present in everyday life. In college basketball, there’s no greater anomaly than the performances of Wake Forest’s Alondes Williams.

This season, Williams is averaging 27.0 points per game and shooting 73.3% from the field. He’s played the most minutes at 33.4 per game and is second in rebounding with a total of 11. Not only that, he leads the team in dishing out assists with seven and a team second-best of six steals. Those are phenomenal numbers. They are worthy of being mentioned in an ACC first team and definitely deserving of consideration from scouts. But if we set aside the remarkable numbers and have a thorough look at Williams’ collegiate career, we will find the gaping discrepancy.

Last season, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 6.7 points per game. He also had a mere 2.8 rebounds for the Oklahoma Sooners. His highlight was recording a season-best 15 points in the Sooners loss to Gonzaga in the NCAA tournament. The question to ask is how does a player increases his points per game by over 20 points? The only logical explanation, in this instance, was that Williams transferred schools. Williams is a graduate student who is breathing fresher air under the guidance of a new coach, Steve Forbes, who has given the guard license to play.

Williams has been given the green light to shoot and to express his game on the court. While there’s no other tangible evidence that could be drawn from his recent soaring development, there’s the likely theory that he’s listened to his coaches, that he’s working hard in practice and in the off-hours and now is seeing his efforts being rewarded. It’s the only plausible explanation for such a leap in scoring and rebounding. But then again, it’s all still a mystery as to how a player went from averaging 6.7 points one season to 27.0 points the next.

There’s also the theory emanating from the source. Williams tweeted that he’s 110% committed to the University of Wake Forest and it’s time to make people into believers.

He has a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove to the doubters that he has a value on the court. So far, he is succeeding and enjoying his time under the tutelage of Coach Forbes. There’s no doubt that Williams is playing for a chance to be a legitimate consideration as a professional athlete. Given his recent rise from the doldrums of mediocrity, he has the ideal platform to stake his claim.
