Centerville HS bowling teams are on a roll

CENTERVILLE, Ohio — This year’s Centerville High School (CHS) girls’ bowling team entirely comprises young ladies who have learned to bowl after starting high school.

The great thing about bowling at the high school level is that it truly provides opportunities for our students to participate for the school without prior experience. That’s not to say that it doesn’t require work to reach the varsity level, but it’s significantly more possible with bowling.

We take tremendous pride in helping girls develop into highly competitive bowlers; and that will be put to the test this season. We have a fantastic history of competing for state titles, with two championships (the most recent coming just three years ago) and several other close calls. The Lady Elks will be led by seniors Harleen Kaur and Abigail Kayata, and juniors Jayla Bowers and Emma Hatfield. This foursome has improved a great deal together and will be integral to our success.

The CHS boys’ bowling team is not only one of the top teams in Ohio, but also in the nation, as evidenced by their winning the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship this past summer.

The boys are chomping at the bit to get the new season started. We have a good mix of returning athletes from the national championship team and a couple freshmen, with everyone’s goal set on winning this year’s state championship. The boys lost a heartbreaker in last season’s state quarterfinals to eventual champion Kettering Fairmont High School, but come back this season nearly fully loaded.

Seniors Anthony Conty and Brendan Salo are the undisputed leaders of the team. Brendan is the reigning Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) bowling athlete of the year, after posting a school record 230.1 average; and Anthony is a two-time all-conference selection. Either could win the individual state title this year. There are numerous potential contributors, including all-conference second team member Nolan Caban. The boys certainly aim to repeat as conference champions, but there is no denying that the ultimate goal is capturing the state title.

Note from Andy: The determination of Jimmy Rhoads and the girls’ program to succeed is off the charts. He has taken players who have literally never bowled and turned them into competitors—an incredible feat.

Note from Jimmy: Boys’ Head Coach Andy Parker has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top coaches in the country, having been named one of the Bowlers Journal 100 Top Bowling Coaches numerous times; this list includes only a handful of high school coaches. He has had a hand in developing much of the top talent in the region, spanning well beyond our high school teams. The entire coaching staff leans on and learns from Andy’s experience and knowledge. He is our secret weapon for turning non-bowlers into all-conference selections.
