Get to know Twin Peaks AD Cameron Wright

LONGMONT, Colo. — A Q&A with Twin Peaks AD Cameron Wright.

How long have you been involved in school sports?
Cameron Wright: I have been involved in school sports for the past 20 years +. I started coaching my own two sons in their early years and became a more competitive coach when they reached middle school.

What made you decide to be a coach?
Wright: Coaching my own sons is what put me on this path, but learning how influential I could be from this position, and the impact I potentially could make on someone’s life fueled my desire to be a coach at the high school level. That eventually led me to this full time career that revolves around the passion I have for sports and the student athletes we come in contact with.

What do you like most about your job?
Wright: I enjoy the relationships the best. These student athletes will remember those that invested in their lives far longer than the actual experience of a win or a loss. I have enjoyed on many occasions running into a former player and catching up with them, and seeing how they are doing in their adult lives. In those moments you realize the impact you made, and the sincerity with which they are thankful for what you were able to do for them.

Why do you think being involved in school sports is important for kids?
Wright: The lessons you learn from organizing competition, belonging to a team, and being held accountable to others, are lifetime skills that apply broadly to so many aspects of life. I also believe that participation in sports helps social and emotional growth in young people as well. As I said above, the lessons you learn in sports are needed and apply so much in your daily life. Participation in sports will lead to better work habits, better health choices and also make you far more comfortable in many social situations.

What is the most important habit for an athlete to have?
Wright: I am not sure if this is a habit, so much as a necessity for athletes, but the ability to work hard and keep learning are both attributes that successful athletes and people for that matter must have. Maybe in terms of a habit, consistent practice. I’ve heard the phrase, practice makes perfect. Well, in fact, only perfect practice makes perfect.

Favorite motivational quote?
Wright: One of my favorites came from John Wooden, “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

As for me, I have been married to my wife Isabelle for 31 years, and we have 2 sons. My older son is married and has 2 children of his own. My younger son is the facilities manager here at TPCA, and it is a joy to work with him daily. I took a very different path to becoming an athletic director. I was in the car sales industry for 23 years, and I had coached my sons in many sports in their youth. It wasn’t until I was offered a job as a HS assistant basketball coach that I realized exactly how much passion I had for sports, and the impact I could possibly make on a young person’s life.

I coached HS Basketball for 5 years at Skyline High School, before one day applying for the Boys Basketball Head Coaching position right here at Twin Peaks. My sons had both attended TPCA for their elementary years, and I have always had a soft spot for this school. I now cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. The chance to impact young student athletes, help them figure out the right ways to do things and help them shape themselves into fantastic young adults is amazing. Confucius said, “Choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. Trust me, that is a true statement in my case.
