Q&A with Vicky Yang, a performer for the Regina Rhythmic gymnastics club

REGINA, Saskatchewan — A Q&A with Vicky Yang who is a performer for the Regina Rhythmic gymnastics club.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Vicky Yang: My name is Vicky Yang, I was born and raised right here in Regina. I’m currently a Grade 10 student at Campbell. My parents are originally from China and they immigrated here for University. I have one younger sister and my grandparents come and visit us regularly. My family got a dog recently. Her name is Birdy and she’s been a great addition to our family. I’ve always loved spending time outdoors but I also love relaxing inside. I’m a trilingual person, and I’m currently also learning Dutch for when Team Sask Gymnastics goes to Amsterdam for World Gymnaestrada Amsterdam 2023.

What sport/sports do you compete in? How/why did you get started?
Yang: I’m currently doing rhythmic gymnastics with Regina Rhythmic Gymnastics Club (RRGC). I’m in a performance level team, which means it’s not fully competitive but also not just recreational, just comfortably in between. I did artistic gymnastics when I was a toddler but I fell off the balance beam one time and didn’t like it anymore. My parents had seen an advertisement for RRGC at my daycare, and they decided to sign me up for it. I started rhythmic gymnastics when I was around three and I’ve been doing it ever since, only taking a break last year due to COVID.

What type of achievements have you accomplished already?
Yang: The teams I’ve been on have won in a few categories during Challenge Cup such as winning 1st place in free during the 21st Challenge Cup. I’m not too sure about the exact details for the rest as I have lost those certificates. I have also learned many new and more difficult rhythmic skills as I’ve gotten older. I’ve been to the 2018 Canadian Gymnaestrada and am looking forward to going to the 2022 Canadian Gymnaestrada and the World Gymnaestrada Amsterdam 2023!

What is your goal in the sport/sports?
Yang: My goal in rhythmic gymnastics is just to enjoy it. Just to create some memories that I can later look back on. As well as to work as hard as I can, so I can be the best that I can.

What do you love about the sport/sports?
Yang: I love hanging out with my teammates and learning new skills and routines to later on perfect. I love going to different places and trying new things. I love making new friends and meeting new people during competitions and I love helping out with the younger girl groups and watching the younger girls learning skills with all the apparatus.

Advice to others interested in starting?
Yang: I say just do it! I have so much fun every week learning new skills, practicing old ones and catching up with my friends. Everyone is very welcoming and accepting at RRGC and it’s just so positive. I help out with a younger group and every class they’re always running around and laughing and it’s just so fun. You don’t need too much experience to join, especially when you’re younger. I promise down the line you’ll have met many new people and you’ll love watching yourself improve throughout the years. Although some flexibility and coordination wouldn’t do any harm!
