Spotlights: Fall sport athletes at Walsingham Academy

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A spotlight on several Walsingham Academy athletes from the Fall 2021 season.

Sarah Newman (field hockey)
Sarah Newman, a senior captain on the field hockey team, has guided the Trojans to an 11-2 start going
into the last week of the regular season. The Trojans have been ranked all season and are looking
forward to hosting a state tournament game for the first time in years. This season, Sarah has scored
multiple game-winning goals, is first on the team in assists, third on the team in goals, and controls the
tempo of the game from midfield.

Will Patterson (boys soccer)
Will Patterson, a sophomore, leads the team in goals with 12, including five during a two-game stretch in October. The Trojans finished with a winning record for the first time in several seasons. Will started the year in a more defensive position but shifted to an attacking role, where he has excelled.

Parker Shonka (cross country)
Parker Shonka, a junior, is a co-captain of this year’s cross country team. This year’s team is much improved, due in large part to Parker’s performances and leadership. Going into three championship meets, the team is expected to see their best results in years.

Jordan Thomas (girls tennis)
Jordan Thomas, a sophomore, competes in both tennis and field hockey. On the tennis court, she went
8-1 in #1 singles in TCIS play and is the top-seeded player going into the conference tournament. Her
impressive season includes victories over the best players from Norfolk Academy, Cape Henry, and
Norfolk Collegiate.

KA Hamner (sailing)
KA Hamner, the captain of the sailing team, has provided experience and leadership all season long. She leads practices, recruits new team members, and guided an inexperienced team to a big victory over Norfolk Academy in September.

Grace Brady, Rachel Owens and Arielle Hill (volleyball)
Grace, Rachel and Arielle have been staples of a volleyball program that has been in rebuild mode for
the last few seasons. In late October, this core crew led their team to its first victory in several seasons
over Summit Christian Academy.
