Syracuse quarterback Tommy Devito says goodbye to Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (BVM) Syracuse football starting quarterback Tommy Devito is officially in the transfer portal as a senior. Devito announced his goodbye to the Orange a few weeks ago over Twitter.

“I have to do what’s best for me, and it is with a heavy heart that I am announcing that I will be entering the transfer portal,” Devito said on social media

After a season-ending injury against Duke his junior year, Devito came to terms that he would get little playing time for the remainder of this season. He went to coach Dino Babers’ office to tell him he was leaving the team and Babers did not persuade him to stay. Devito figured that Babers knew it was coming.

The decision followed the fourth game of this season after Devito sat on the bench for a portion of the game. He competed with Garrett Shrader, the new transfer quarterback from Mississippi State, for a starting position. The Orange junior split time with Shrader against Rutgers and Albany before Shrader was named the starting quarterback for the Liberty game. He did not receive any playing time since.

After his injury occurred, along with competition with Shrader for the starting position, Devito says it was a tough decision to make whether to stay a part of the team or not. He said he could have easily just given up and quit on them, but he wanted to be that support for the team. Devito used Tua and Jalen Hurts from Alabama as his role models through this process, as they went through a similar situation.

“Tua went down in one game and Jalen came up,” Devito told Sports Illustrated. “That’s what it is, that’s the game. Injuries happen. Everything happens. So you never know when your numbers are going to be called.”

Devito had been a part of the Orange program for the past three-plus seasons. As a freshman, Devito played in a total of eight games as the backup for Eric Dungey and achieved many season-highs that year. During his sophomore season, he started in 11 of 12 games. The Syracuse quarterback tied a school record with 19 touchdown passes, which is the highest number by a sophomore in school history.

With the standout season, Devito was ranked third in the ACC with his 4:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio that year. The finish put him only behind North Carolina’s Sam Howell and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence. Devito received many other accolades for outstanding achievements during his standout sophomore season.

In his junior season and now last season playing for the Orange, Devito completed eight touchdowns in four games before his season ending injury.

Devito will have one more year of eligibility remaining and will be in search of his next opportunity. The former Syracuse quarterback will look to get back to his sophomore season form whenever the rising senior lands.
