Close losses haunt Canyon Cougars’ season

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (BVM) — The Canyon Cougars football team had a down year. A couple of wins were not enough to overshadow the amount of disappointing losses that they suffered this season. While their district season was not awful, finishing at .500 on the season, their non-district form is what really sunk the cougars.

The season started off with a disappointing loss at home to East Central High School. In this game, the Cougars would lose 34-17, never really coming close to their opponent. Their next game would give the Cougars some hope, as they defeated Clark High School 41-31.

Now at 1-1 on the season, things would take a turn for the worse for the Cougars. Canyon would go on to lose three straight games, including two of those to district opponents. The first of these three losses would come in a non-district road game at New Braunfels High School. The Cougars would lose this one 35-21, close but not good enough on the day to get the win.

Next up was the first game of district play at home to Dripping Springs High School. The Cougars would fight hard on both sides of the ball in this game, but would come up just short in a 48-45 overtime loss. After this defeat, the Cougars would lose another district heartbreaker to Seguin High School on the road 28-21. Through two district games, the Canyon Cougars were 0-2 and had lost both games by a combined 10 points. Such fine margins that would be the difference between the Cougars having a post season and being at home.

After the two district losses, with a record of 1-4, the Cougars would finally get back on track. They would dominate in each of their next two district games, scoring over 50 points in each win. They defeated McCollum High School 58-20 and Lehman High School 53-0 to improve their district record to 2-2.

They Cougars would go on to win one and lose two of their last district games of the season. They put up a great offensive performance, but ultimately could not stop the high-powered offense of Veterans Memorial High School in a 62-46 loss. They would defeat Harlandale High School before ultimately losing to Johnson High School to close out the year. The Canyon Cougars would finish with a 4-6 record and not make the postseason.

Reflecting on their season, those two close losses early in the district campaign stick in the mind. If the Cougars could have somehow found a way to edge those two close losses, the season would have ended much different. This is something that I’m sure the coaching staff will be looking at in the offseason and will have circled in red when their schedule for next year comes out. Until thenm all that’s left to do is prepare and figure out how they can be on the right side of some of these close wins.
