Ethan Parrish: Where is he now?

STANFORD, Calif. — Ethan Elliott Parrish comes from an extremely long line of swimmers. His grandfather, Bill Parrish, won CIF San Diego Section Player of the Year honors in 1969 after leading Coronado High to the championship. He and his wife Kristi Parrish were inducted into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame as community leaders in 2012.

Meanwhile, Ethan’s brother, Blake Parrish, was a three-time All-American at Stanford and led the Cardinals to the NCAA final in 2018.

Ethan swam the latest leg of that legacy as the senior star of the Dos Pueblos High School varsity water polo team. With an enviable stature of 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he played an active role as an attacker for the Chargers. His jersey number was nine. He graduated in 2020 and followed in his big brother’s footsteps by moving on to Stanford and being a part of their water polo team too.

Ethan said that his grandfather has been a huge influence on him along with the rest of his family as they passed their competitive spirit on to him. Ethan was born in Portland, Oregon, to Chris and Hannah Parrish. He has three brothers, Blake, Hayes and Bowen, and one sister, Addison.

During his time at Dos Pueblos, Ethan worked hard to improve his game and was beloved by his coaches and teammates.

“The 6-foot-3 attacker has come a long way from his days as a chubby, short freshman,” remarked one of his high school teammates.

Ethan alluded to the fact that he took a bunch of lumps from bigger teams in his freshman year but progressing through that and dealing with it helped him mature.

It’s not only the physical transition from freshman year but the mental transition, too,” Ethan said. “The way I would look at the game and the way I would look at other teams and opponents and my goals for the rest of the season. That has really evolved since I was young.”

Ethan accumulated quite a stack of achievements during the four years he spent in high school, including but not limited to:

  • Four-year letter winner who captained his team as a sophomore, junior and senior
  • Two-time Channel League Champion (2018, 2019)
  • Runner-up in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 championship (2018)
  • Two-time Channel League MVP (2018, 2019)
  • Three-time Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Player of the Year (2018, 2019, 2020)
  • Two-time All-CIF selection (2018, 2019)
  • Team MVP as a junior and senior
  • Played club for Santa Barbara 805 Water Polo Club
  • Spent time with USAWP from 2016-2018
  • Lettered three times in swimming and twice in basketball

Ethan did not slack when he got into Stanford. His accolades so far include:

  • MPSF team champion (2020)
  • All-MPSF honorable mention (2020)
  • Competed in 10 games, ranking fourth on the team in goals (15) while attempting 30 shots
  • Scored season-high three goals twice

Ethan is currently a sophomore student at the prestigious Stanford University and plays water polo for the Cardinals. He plays the position of driver. He has not yet declared a major.
