Alyssa Murphy garners Rookie of the Week honors

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Commonwealth Coast Conference named their Player/Rookie of the Week to someone on the Western New England Golden Bears who is absolutely deserving of this accolade.

Alyssa Murphy, a forward from Plymouth, Massachusetts, studies engineering outside the ice paths, but inside the rink, she majors in scoring. Murphy collected three goals this past weekend alone, including the game winner against the University of New England on Saturday. That goal was one of two in the third period from Murphy which helped seal the comeback for the Golden Bears for their fourth victory on the season.

Murphy is a sophomore in the classroom but is playing her first full season due to last year’s competitions being canceled due to COVID-19. Despite that, she leads her team in goals scored and is tied for the lead in points. She has six goals so far on the season and seven points with many more to come.

The Golden Bears sit currently with a 4-4-1 record overall with a 2-4 conference record. They are in fifth place in the conference, but Murphy’s play is certainly something promising for the program to look forward to.

The Rookie of the Week also has three power play goals on the season, two of which were game winning goals. Murphy’s offensive production accounts for almost half of her team’s total goals scored so far on the season, as well as a third of the power play production. Needless to say, she has been a key facilitator in getting the puck into the back of the net.

Her success should not be looked at as lightning in a bottle so to speak. Throughout high school, Murphy demonstrated her abilities as a hockey player. Prior to attending Western New England, Murphy graduated from Silver Lake Regional High School where she played hockey, lacrosse and soccer for four years. She was named a Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic selection and earned more accolades including team most valuable player, all-star selections and team captain at one point. She also spent a year of her hockey career in the junior leagues and is now tearing it up at the NCAA level.

The Golden Bears play conference rival Suffolk next on Tuesday night at home. It will be their first regular season matchup of two where Western New England will travel to Suffolk to play the finale on Jan 15. Their matchup Tuesday night will conclude the December portion of their schedule and will force fans to wait until next year for more hockey action.
