A race to remember: November’s Sacramento Spartan sprint

ELK GROVE, Calif. — I was introduced to Spartan racing in 2017 by a couple who are members of Elk Grove Fieldhouse. They led a group of beginners through our first race, and it was such an amazing experience that years later I wanted to pay it forward and introduce a new set of individuals to that same experience. Elk Grove Fieldhouse already has a race team (Faster Stronger Project) and I reached out for help putting together a separate beginner’s team for the November Sacramento Spartan Sprint. The call went out and our team of about 20 was created.

On race day, there was lots of excitement, and we were joined by gym mates, family members and friends who showed up to cheer, support and document the experience. We arrived at the venue (Van Vleck Ranch – Rancho Murrieta) about an hour before our open heat to gather together for pre-race group photos, answer last minute questions and to remind everyone that the race was a teambuilding exercise, a way to test of our fitness/endurance and the skills and to ultimately have fun and spark a passion to participate in more obstacle course races.

That mission was accomplished and although some of us struggled through a few obstacles the team really stuck together and ultimately had FUN! Our team members earned more than a just a t-shirt and medal that day. After the race everyone met up for dinner to celebrate and share their thoughts on the race. New friends were made, goals were crushed, an item was crossed off the bucket list and now the call has been placed to train harder going into 2022 and for the group to complete a Spartan Trifecta next year.
