Lourdes Eagles playing their best tennis

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Lourdes High School girls have always excelled at tennis. The girls have been resilient and consistent with their wins.

Rochester Lourdes girls tennis were nominated many times for the amateur team of the year award, and they finally won it in 2005.

In 2016, the Lourdes Eagles kept their record perfect when they played against Century High School. With their close victory by 4-3, two wins in singles and two wins in doubles, the Eagles once again showed their hard work and toughness.

Losing is as much a part of life as winning. The Eagles seem to take both with pride and humility. The Eagles lost the singles game in the Class A state championship back in 2016 with only a single win in No. 2 doubles. The coach still acknowledges the spirit of the team, “But we were competitive in all three of the doubles matches, and came out a winner at No. 2 doubles.”

However, the team has made name for itself in Rochester. The Eagles are now ranked second in Class single-A. According to the Eagles’ coach, David Pettengill, “His team is something to watch out for.”

Lourdes tennis has been ranked in the top two spots since Aug. 2021. Junior Ryann Witter has been undefeated over the last year, and she stayed at No. 1 in singles. Likewise, in the doubles, Elyse Palen maintained her No. 1 spot with no defeat last year.

The Eagles stayed true to their purpose and their work ethic. The coach said, “Our top seven players returning from last year will be our strength for this year. Our singles will be strong, and our No. 1 doubles will have had experience.”

As predicted by the coach, the Eagles proved their worth with tough games and wins.

Their attitude to not give up, sent them off to be in the top spots. At the section 1A tournament, the team emerged victorious with the top two spots in both singles and doubles. Witter spoke of the victory, “To have this be an all-Lourdes final, I am so proud of all of our girls. All of us have worked so hard for this. This is the best we could have hoped for.”

In the class 1A bracket, the Rochester Lourdes stand at No. 2. The Eagles are qualified back-to-back for 27 years into the state tournament. Led by Witter, ranked No. 3 at singles, in class 1A.

The team became the champion of state class A consolation by defeating Pine City by 5-2. The team is flourishing with their tenacious spirits and hard work.
