Lone Peak Knights complete their championship run
HIGHLAND, Utah — The Lone Peak Knights varsity football team did not have a perfect season. There were bumps and mishaps along the road, but the one thing about this team is that they did not ever let that stop them. They continued to battle not only for a state championship, but for each other and for the coaches that helped guide them the entire way. The result of this unrivaled determination was achieving the ultimate goal and becoming state champions, a task that will live forever in the minds of the Knights’ faithful.
The Knights’ season started off with non-region play, where they would find some success but also some struggles. The Knights would win their first two games of non-region play against Timpview High School and Alemany High School in relatively close games. Their third game of region play is where the Knights would suffer their first loss of the season as they took on Bishop Gorman High School. The Knights would lose this game by a fair margin as Bishop Gorman dominated the game and went on to win 35-7. This would be the final game of non-region play for the Knights as they closed out with a 2-1 record.
Entering region play, the Knights got back to their winning ways in a hurry. They would go on to record back-to-back wins, defeating both Pleasant Grove High School and American Fork High School. Next up for the Knights was Skyridge High School, who they would lose to in a very close game, 14-9. Lone Peak would not let this one loss derail their season however, as they went on to close out region play with two more wins, leaving them with a record of 6-2 which saw them qualify for the state playoffs.
The first two playoff games went smoothly for the Knights as they defeated both Herriman High School and Bingham High School. As fate would have it, in the semifinals of the state playoffs, Lone Peak would have a rematch with Skyridge, the only team in their region that was able to defeat them. In this revenge game, the Knights’ defense would put on a clinic and record their first shutout of the year as Lone Peak would go on to win 20-0. The win in the semifinals set up a date in the state championship with Corner Canyon High School. In what was a back and forth game, Lone Peak emerged victorious, 49-42, capturing a state championship to cap off an unforgettable season.
