Meet Keiser Seahawks running back Marques Burgess

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Marques Burgess is a running back for Keiser University in the Indialantic area. Burgess is 5-foot-8, 194 pounds and is a junior at Keiser University. His hometown is in Fort Pierce, Florida and he went to high school at Fort Pierce Westwood.

Burgess was named Mid-South Conference Sun Division Player of the Week for the third consecutive week during the season. He obtained this by getting 190 yards rushing along with 39 carries to win against Ave Maria 34-27. Not only has Burgess made an impact on the field, but off the field as well.

“It felt great to earn MSC Sun Division Offensive Player of the Week honors because this was my first time and putting in a lot of hard work and dedication off the field that nobody sees and to see how it all played out was an amazing feeling,” Burgess said about the accolade.

As a freshman, Burgess earned second team All Mid-South Division honors at the running back position. He was the starter for every game, ten to be exact for the Seahawks. Rushing for 729 yards on 149 carries, Burgess averaged 4.9 yards per carry.

Against opponent Edward Waters, Burgess ran for 125 yards, his best in his freshman year. He had a total of seven touchdowns, catching 22 passes for 146 yards and had another best against Warner.

As a sophomore in just nine games, he rushed for 744 yards in 147 carries. He totaled 10 touchdowns nine rushing and one receiving. As a running back, he did well as a receiver, catching passes with 142 yards total.

On the ground, Burgess averaged 82.7 yards per game. In a single game against Warner, Burgess put up 176 yards rushing with 21 carries and he helped win the game.

In November of this year, Burgess was given the honor of the Mid-South Conference Champion of Character award. Burgess was honored with this title due to demonstrating the five core character values of the NAIA.

Burgess participated in the drive thru food distribution for the Tree of Life Drive Thru Food Distribution on Nov. 21, 2021. It is nice to see student athletes participating in different things that help the community it is a breath of fresh air.

“Anytime I can, I will always participate in a community event because I love helping out and making people feel good,” he said.

Now that the season is over, Burgess had a couple of goals this offseason.

“My goals for my senior year are to win a national championship, that will be number one overall, and to be even better than I was my junior year because there’s always room to clean up your play on the field,” he said. “My goals for this offseason are to get stronger, more explosive and pick the younger guys up to push themselves harder to be better than they were last year so the next season we will be even more prepared.”

Burgess has made strides personally and athletically and strives to be a better person every day. Burgess should be proud of what he has accomplished and continues to do well off and on the field.
