Aden Roe is helping lead Council Rock North wrestling

NEWTOWN, Pa. — Aden Roe developed the skill set for wrestling long before he made it into the lineup at Council Rock North.

The Indians senior wrestler, who competes at 215 and 285 pounds based on the team’s needs, was missing one of the key ingredients to competing with his heavier opponents. Roe needed to find some strength to complement his skills. He was able to do this by doing a type of cross-training.

After picking up football, he started to see improvement. Roe, who had a 12-16 record entering this season, is off to an 8-2 start to this season with four pins. He recently placed fifth at the X-Calibur Wrestling Tournament at Wilkes-Barre Area High School last Sunday.

“He’s always been in the thick of good competition,” Council Rock North coach Michael Diglia said. “There is a lot of strong competition in the district. Picking up football allowed him to expand his skill set.”

Roe had a chance to learn from experienced wrestlers. Max Harrar, who now wrestles at Bucknell University, held down the upper weights. Roe, who will move between the two upper weights as the team needs, was able to learn behind him.

“(Roe) was always able to wrestle,” Coach Diglia said. “He could roll and scramble. He didn’t have the power. He moves well and should be able to apply those skills at heavyweight.”

The Indians have seen a lot of improvement during the early part of this season. Council Rock North is 3-3 in dual meets and placed 10th as a team at the X-Calibur Tournament.

Freshman Eren Sement (113 pounds) was the team’s lone champion, while senior Tony Burke (120), who is a two-time state qualifier, placed third.

Sement has made a solid first impression, winning his first nine matches. That includes five pins and a 5-1 decision victory over Paramaus Catholic (New Jersey) wrestler Dylan Ross in the finals of the X-Calibur Tournament.

Burke, who placed seventh at state last year, has a 9-1 record thus far.

“Tony is a leader on the team and helps run practice,” Coach Diglia said. “He works really hard. He never wants to stop. He just wants to keep wrestling.”

Coach Diglia is happy with the direction the program is headed. He believes the early dual meets and tournaments will help as the team comes up on District 1 competition.

“We want to find and wrestle the best,” Coach Diglia said. “We’re really happy with where we are right now. We’re ahead of schedule. This team has a lot of fight and belief.”
