Dive into learning about the swim team at Centerville HS

CENTERVILLE, Ohio — Now through Feb., I look forward to continuing spending two evenings per week at the Washington Township RecPlex with an incredible group of swimmers from Centerville High School (CHS). This dedicated group of student athletes gives its all in the pool, to compete at our upcoming meets. This season’s meets will culminate in the state championship, to be held in Canton, Ohio, on Feb. 26.

Several standout swimmers have returned to the CHS swim/dive squad this year, including district and state qualifiers and a para-athlete. The wonderful thing about high school swimming is that it encompasses the whole gamut of ability; the program is open to all skill levels and physical abilities.

In addition to serving as head coach of the high school team, I’m also assistant head coach of the WTRC Sharks, under Head Coach Evan Mulliken. Broken into groups based on ability, this program offers between two and eight practices per week at the RecPlex. The Sharks compete in several meets throughout the year, allowing tremendous learning opportunities for swimmers and pushing them to succeed and grow.

Although 90% of WTRC Sharks are from Centerville-Washington Township, we have swimmers from Beavercreek, Kettering, Miamisburg, Springboro and Waynesville.

The WTRC Sharks masters team—which practices twice weekly, from 5:15-6:30am—is a loyal and dedicated group from all walks of life. Among the 14 members are a college student and a variety of work professionals.

I have been a swim/dive coach since 1977, at the recreation, high school and college levels. When it comes down to it, though, I’m not a swim coach; I’m a swimmer’s coach. I want to listen to them, hear them, see what they want to do and make it work for them. I love learning how to relate with the kids. That’s my big difference. They’re young men and young women, who need our guidance through this time in their lives. It’s more than just swimming; it’s their enjoyment of their high school career. I’m here for the kids.
