Q&A with Moose Jaw native Elaine Robson on her passion for curling

MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan — A Q&A with Elaine Robson, who helped her team win the Saskatchewan Women’s Provincial title in curling in 2018.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Elaine Robson: My name is Elaine Robson, and I have lived in Moose Jaw for over 20 years now. I originally grew up on a small farm north of Morse. I have two amazing children, Emily and Carson, who are currently in Grade 8 and Grade 6. We like to stay active together as a family—Emily curls in both her school club and in the youth program that I also volunteer with, and both kids participate in Moose Jaw Rotary Track club. In the summer we can often be found swimming, camping, and biking together.

I originally moved to Moose Jaw to go to SIAST where I completed two diploma programs in Business Administration and Marketing. A few years after that, I completed an Income Tax Specialist Certification Course.  I am currently a bookkeeper for a large multi corporation farm and I also own my own income tax and bookkeeping business which I manage from my home.

What sport do you compete in? How/why did you get started?

Robson: The main sport I still compete competitively in is curling. I would have to say it was my parents who got me involved in the sport of curling. I’m originally from a very small town and while growing up a lot of my time was spent at the curling rink watching my dad curl. His love for the sport helped to foster a love of curling for myself and while he passed away in 2005, his passion continues to inspire me to this day.

Our team competed in the 2021 Everest Canadian Curling Club Championships from Nov 28 to Dec 4, 2021. This event was originally started in 2009 and is set up for club teams who don’t necessarily have the time or resources to compete at the high-performance level. This event gives club curlers the opportunity to represent their home club/province or territory at a national level. I also golf and used to play fastball, volleyball and badminton.

What type of achievements have you accomplished already?

Robson: Our team won the Saskatchewan Womens Provincial title in 2018 and competed at the Travelers Curling Club Championship in Miramichi, New Brunswick where we lost in the quarter final. Our goal is to be the first Saskatchewan Womens Team to win the Canadian Club Championship.

What do you love about the sport?

Robson: I love everything about this sport. All the people I have met throughout the years and continue to meet. I have a fantastic team. The game itself … competing and having the chance to travel and play the sport you love is an amazing experience.

Advice to others interested in starting?

Robson: My advice to anyone interested in curling is that it’s never too late to try it out. It’s definitely more challenging than it may look but there are so many opportunities to try it out. There are learn to curl programs or fun leagues to join. All you need to do is check out a recreation guide or contact your local curling club.
