Great changes for sports at Martinsville HS with addition of $12 million fieldhouse

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — If you have driven by Martinsville High School you probably would have noticed the large new building addition near the west parking lot. I had the pleasure of talking with Athletic Director Kip Staggs to find out more about this lovely facility.

Staggs said the 40,000 square foot addition is currently being referred to as “The Fieldhouse”. The school will entertain re-naming rights to a large corporate sponsor if it is a good fit for both parties.

The Fieldhouse was inspired to give Martinsville students the best. “We want the best for our students,” Staggs said,” and the Fieldhouse is a step in the right direction.”  The Fieldhouse is as good as it gets in comparison to others in the area. The goal was to address specific needs in the development of the fieldhouse. Our track teams traditionally did not have a sufficient place to practice in the winter and now they will have the opportunity to practice in a quality space out of the weather. Our wrestling team practiced off campus and now they can practice in a 6000 square foot facility. Additionally, we added locker rooms, batting cages, volleyball courts, basketball courts and a tennis court.

The Fieldhouse will be used mostly for practices by multiple teams in and out of season. The high school will host a few weekend tournaments. Martinsville band will also be able to take advantage of the facility. The Fieldhouse will allow teams to practice after school instead of 8:00 p.m. practices which we anticipate will increase participation with each sport.

Athletic Director Staggs further said, “The $12 million project was through a bond and did not raise local taxes”. Which is a win- win for our community.

Martinsville High School is looking forward to hosting events in the new Fieldhouse and feels the city of Martinsville will benefit financially when they host weekend or larger tournaments. Traveling teams and fans will need places to eat between games along with possibly lodging. Martinsville HS athletics will also be able to host larger events that we have not been able to host in the past.

“We are thankful for such a great facility,” according to Staggs, “ and excited to put it to use”.
