Spotlights: Two West Ottawa HS athletes

HOLLAND, Mich. — Gavin Hardy (soccer) and Arianne Olson (cross country) of West Ottawa High School are excelling this year in their respective sports.

Gavin Hardy, Soccer (Senior)

From Coach Hoa Nguyen: Gavin is a true player of the game. He is very engaged, asking great questions to learn the game better and always trying to improve his skill level in all areas. He takes constructive criticism well and is rarely offended, knowing the feedback will improve his game. Gavin is a very smart player with good composure on the ball. He rarely makes mental mistakes, but if he does, then he adjusts well to keep playing consistently for the team.

Gavin is a true student of the game, and he is always willing to work hard. Special players like him are never satisfied and are always looking for ways to improve. Most importantly, Gavin is a young man with great character. He is a good person both on and off the field, representing his team well. There’s no question why he was team captain in both his junior and senior years. Gavin is willing to take extreme measures to drive himself and his teammates to be better. His passion for the game is off the charts!

Arianne Olson, Cross Country (Junior)

From Coach Kyle Barnes: Arianne is one of the best high school distance runners in America. While it’s not possible to compare one sport to another, I think she is the female Athlete of the Season because she’s the best at what she does relative to any other athlete in our area. Not only is she the best runner in West Michigan, she is also ranked in the Top 25 in the U.S., recently qualifying for the XC National Championship in San Diego, California.

The success Arianne has achieved is a product of her hard work. In addition to becoming one of the best individual runners in the country, she also helped our team finish as state runner-up in cross country this year. (Our team is also ranked in the Top 25 in America.) I enjoy the challenge of coaching such a talented athlete as Arianne. As much as I’d like to think that I’ve made her a better runner, I know she has helped me become a better coach.
