Unionville HS girls tennis season wrap-up

CHADDS FORD, Pa. — The Unionville High School girls tennis team had an amazing run this year, advancing all the way to the state championships in Hershey. In their regular season, the girls came out on top and proceeded to district championships undefeated, despite tough opponents like Henderson High School and Methacton High School. Many members of the team won in the Chesmont League and earned the team the first seed placement. Allie and Emma Stanislawczyk won first place in doubles at Chestmonts, and Catherine Stone and Meera Sehgal placed third. In singles, Grace Li took the championship home.

The team’s energy was high as they traveled to Districts at the end of October, having been undefeated with a final record of 8-0 in their regular season. However, the team lost a difficult battle against Conestoga, placing second with a score of 2-3 in the district championships. The Longhorns had three teams competing in doubles, more than any other school present. Unfortunately, they all lost in their second round match.

Three girls also competed in singles, Meera Seghal who lost in the first round, and Catherine Stone lost in the second round. Li, who was second seed and had a bye in the bracket, won second in the singles tournament at Districts, so she was the only player advancing to the state championship. The State Championship also took place in Hershey, and Li started off strong, defeating her first opponent with scores of 6-1 and 6-0, despite the 27 degree weather. “My hands were so cold that I couldn’t hold my racket properly,” Li said. She played hard and made it to the semifinals against the same opponent from Districts. Li finished as the runner up in the singles state tournament.

The team-level state tournament was another bright spot for the Longhorns. Following up on their district tournament run, the Longhorns blazed through the bracket and made it all the way to the state finals. Although they fell short to Conestoga, the team finished as runner ups bringing home lots of hardware from all of the tournaments. All in all, the team had an amazing season and can’t wait to get back on the court next season for another state-championship run.
