Barrie Jr. Shark Abigail Robinson commits to Carleton University

BARRIE, Ontario — Current Barrie Jr. Shark Abigail Robinson has signed on to play for Carleton University’s women’s hockey team in Ottawa.

Robinson will join the Ravens for the 2023 season after signing a commitment letter in December.

“It was indescribable,” Robinson said. “Walking into the little setup in the room, with my entire family in there, sitting down and signing – it was crazy.”

Robinson decided on Carleton because of her desire to study architectural conservation and sustainability engineering which is just one of a select few schools in the country offering that type of program.

“In my mind, Carleton was my first option because the program was exactly what I wanted,” Robinson said. “When I realized that I could have the opportunity to play for them, it was amazing.”

The chance to be away from home for the first time and be in a new surrounding is something she said is exciting for her.

“Just being able to reinvent myself, meet a whole bunch of new people and having an entirely new experience, it seems like an ideal situation,” Robinson said.

The 17-year-old plays in the center position, a role given to her this season after spending years playing wing. She’s described as a solid and versatile two-way player along with being a great teammate.

“She can play any position and in any circumstance,” Barrie Jr. Sharks’ head coach, Ed Mauro, said. “She’s highly intelligent from a scholastic perspective and her hockey IQ. She’s also a strong skater.

“It was a no-brainer she was going to go there because she wanted to go to an engineering school and they had her program. Abby, being the go-getter that she is, targeted that school and a few months later she is signing her commitment letter.”

The 2021-22 season is Robinson’s first as a Jr. Shark, but she has been part of the Barrie Sharks program since she was young.

“I’m a defensive forward,” Robinson said. “I don’t really dangle around people and score bar down. I’m more the type to set up someone. I like to battle on the boards and beat people to pucks.”

She said she lives by the quote, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

Robinson said she plans on bringing everything she’s learned to this point to Ottawa and believes her will to succeed and strong work ethic will have a positive impact on her new team.

“The girls are going to be bigger, better and stronger so I have to work on my skating to get faster and stronger in my stride,” she said. “If I’m the best player I can be, I know that I’ll be able to reach my full potential and keep up with the girls.”

Robinson will join former Shark Lanie Guimond who began her career with the Ravens last fall.
