Amira Faulkner balances life as three-sport athlete at Trine University

BELLBROOK, Ohio — In high school, Amira Faulkner was a cross country and track runner as well as a swimmer. In the summer of her junior year, she and her sister decided to “throw the bike in and try triathlon”.

Amira is now a Junior at Trine University where she is involved in triathlon, cross country, and track. This season, her triathlon team won the Division III National Championship for triathlon in Tempe, Arizona. A first for Trine Triathlon. In cross country, Amira’s team qualified for Nationals for the first time in school history.

Triathlon has taught Amira that working together with people will get you so much farther and is much better than doing everything on your own. She is proud of the culture that her team has built. They listen to Disney music on their way to races.

When asked who has helped her in her sport, Amira points to her teammates, coaches, and her family. “My teammates push me at practice and challenge me to be better.” Amira’s sister, Avarie, is a DI triathlete at Denver University, has always trained with her. Her parents and family members, including sister Acey, have been at almost every race and have always supported her and cheered her on. Amira’s coaches have helped her improve in her sports and he keeps things light by saying funny things like, “never trust a fart,” “good stars man,” and “do not poop out”.

Covid caused Amira to lose her sophomore season at Trine. There was only one race as travel restrictions kept the team from going anywhere to compete and there were no Nationals.

Amira is now focused on training hard to prepare for her Senior Season. She trains twice per day almost every day by either swimming and running or biking and running or biking and swimming.  She likes training for three separate sports, “It makes training fun”.
