Seniors are staying active with the Nanoose Bay floor curling club

NANOOSE BAY, British Columbia — The Nanoose Bay Floor Curling Club came into existence at the Nanoose Bay Community Center in the 1997/1998 season. One of the people instrumental in getting it started was Bill Christianson.

The Club was, and still is, “A place where seniors can find fun, camaraderie, and exercise,” he says. “Members are from Nanaimo up to Qualicum Beach and curlers range in age from their mid-60’s to the mid-90’s and we stress that anyone can play if they want.”

Pre-COVID, Bonspiels were held in Nanoose, Coombs, Port Alberni, Qualicum Bay, and Courtenay. These were great opportunities to meet and play against other clubs and were a lot of fun for those who wished to be involved.

There are currently about 35 members. Some have remained inactive due to COVID, but the remainder play when they can. Some only play one day a week, while the “die-hards play twice weekly.

Play takes place on Mondays and Fridays from 12.15 pm to approximately 2.30 pm. Two 8-end games are played, followed by coffee, tea and cookies in the Seniors Room. Play is $2.00 and refreshments are 25 cents.

COVID protocols are in place and are strictly followed. All players must be double/triple vaccinated and masks and or face coverings are a must. All levels of fitness and beginners are welcome.
