Q&A with Regina area squash player Isaiah Richter

REGINA, Saskatchewan — A Q&A with Regina area squash player Isaiah Richter.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Isaiah Richter: My name is Isaiah Richter and I am 17 years old from Regina, Saskatchewan. I live with my mom and my 13 year old dog. I go to Campbell Collegiate and I am excited to be graduating very soon. I enjoy listening to music including artists like the Migos, Drake, and J.Cole. I’ve enjoyed playing sports all my life such as football, basketball and squash being the one I play the most.

What sport do you compete in? How/why did you get started?

Richter: I play squash and have been playing for about 7 years. I began playing after my cousin Noah invited me out to play and I have stuck with it ever since. I really enjoyed playing my first time and it became an activity I participated in weekly.

What type of achievements have you accomplished already?

Richter: One of my biggest accomplishments was playing in the 2019 Canada Winter Games. I am currently training and hoping to be selected for the next Winter Games in 2023. My other achievements would be winning Alberta Jesters my first year playing, obtaining a Dunlop sponsorship, and winning some local tournaments.

What is your goal in the sport?

Richter: While I have many goals for my squash career, my biggest are to train/play professionally out of Calgary, AB, and break the top 100 in the PSA rankings. My current goals are to be top 10 in the under 19 national rankings, top 3 within Saskatchewan, and to win more tournaments. Some goals that I will always have are to make sure I’m having fun and giving my best effort on the court.

What do you love about the sport?

Richter: I love squash for many reasons including the physical endurance, strategy, and technical racket skills involved. I love squash because it is an individual sport where I can take full responsibility and credit for my gameplay whether I win or lose. I’m very thankful for the connections and friends I have been able to make through squash including my coaches, my amazing girlfriend, and competitive players like myself. Squash has allowed me the opportunity to travel throughout the country for different tournaments, which has given me lots of great experiences. I’m very grateful for my coach Chris Martin, my family, and everyone else who has supported me either financially, emotionally, or in any other way.

Advice to others interested in starting?

Richter: My advice to others that want to start playing squash would be to just get out and play with your friends. It is a really fun sport and a great way to exercise. I would encourage anyone reading this to go and try squash!
