Q&A

What are your personal goals within your sport?

Campbell Carter: To go pro and compete in the 2028 Olympics for Stand Up Paddle Boarding. This season 2022 to place in the top 10 with the pros at each race or better.

What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and how do you handle it?

Carter: Weather- cold weather makes training difficult. I train year around with a break the month of December. I have specific winter training gear to help get through the winter. Travel – equipment to events that I cannot drive to. Flying a 14-ft. race board is almost impossible. I am fortunate that I ride for a board company @sicmaui, and they try to help with boards on the west coast.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Carter: Not sure. I have a strong support crew that keeps me grounded. In the beginning, just being told you have done the training, now go give it your best; win or lose, it does not matter; have fun. I love racing, so I generally have a good time.

What do you love about your sport?

Carter: Being on the water daily and all the people I meet when traveling. The paddle community is so supportive to all.

Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?

Carter: I eat the same breakfast with a V8 Energy drink.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Carter: Crossfit, swimming, fat tire bike riding, and I work at Wrightsville SUP in the summers giving lessons.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Carter: Being a part of a team is amazing. It is nice to be with other Jrs. on the water. My training plan is a little different, but I just adjust it for team days so I can be with them. I need them to push me, and at races I like to see them all reach new goals. We have so much fun.

What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?

Carter: My Coach Jarrod is always encouraging me to do my best and have fun. My parents do the same.

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Carter: Mistakes while racing- a lot but it all works out. Falling on a start or on a buoy turn. Recovery is to paddle faster once back up. Mistake while SUP surfing – rushing to get a wave.
