Estancia Eagles soar in record-breaking baseball season

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Hard work and determination have earned the Estancia Eagles Varsity Baseball team a place in the history books, or at least, Estancia High School’s record books. Finishing the 2022 season with an impressive 23-5, they broke the standing 1989 school record of 21-7. The win also put them in second place overall in the league (10-5) and secures them a spot in the CIF playoffs this year.

Head Coach Nate Goellrich attributes the phenomenal season to setting and constantly striving to achieve their goals. “Our team goal was to compete for the league championship and set ourselves up for a playoff run. We wanted to treat each game as a new challenge to be our best selves both individually and as a team. Each [player] has had a moment this year that has directly resulted in a victory for us.”

Assistant coaches Brian Burgess and Ty Harper have seen Team Captains Jack Moyer and Trevor Scott grow into becoming excellent leaders on and off the field. After a win, the team camaraderie continues as they share a celebratory dinner. After a loss, they get players to learn from their experience and to continue giving their all at the next game. Moyer and Scott have led the team to achieve an extraordinary goal but no one is allowed to rest on their laurels. They immediately move to focus on the next game.

The new record proves beyond a doubt that the Estancia Baseball team works hard on the field.  “Baseball is a game of failure and how you respond to it, so it is important to be loose and have a positive attitude, ” said Coach Goellrich. Before games, they use different methods to “keep it loose.” From playing “two-ball” to doing dance battles with the opposing team before a game, they keep perspective about the game.

In addition to the team record breaker, some players are breaking individual school records, as well. Andrew Coyotzi is currently tied for the All Time Triples Leader record with four triples this year. James de la O, with 33 RBIs, is only one RBI behind the 1988 record.  Records can be found on the team’s website, www.estanciabaseball.com.
