Weston pitcher Anthony Jorajuria shines in tough loss to Boston English

WESTON, Mass. — It was a breezy spring night in Weston as the Wildcats faced the Eagles on the diamond. The game started around 7:30 p.m. with Anthony Jorajuria taking the mound for Weston.

Jorajuria threw four scoreless innings only allowing one base runner — on a hit by pitch -– and struck out seven. The defense around him was excellent to start the game as well with clean plays all around the infield.

Jorajuria had all of his stuff going yesterday. The fastball had nice action to it, complementing the high velocity. In addition, his offspeed pitches were working well, which allowed him to stay ahead in counts, strike batters out and force soft contact on Boston English batters.

This gave Weston an opportunity to take a lead early on in the game. In the second inning, Benoit Schiermeier gave Weston their second leadoff triple of the night. Two batters later, Michael McLaughlin hit a single and gave Weston a 1-0 lead. Behind him, Nicholas Cross hit a double, which drove in McLaughlin who had previously stolen second. Cross then came around to score, making it 3-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Weston was able to take on a few more runs off a Cross sacrifice-fly and a near-home run bases clearing triple by Jorajuria.

Although this early lead did not hold and Boston English won the game, 17-6, Weston’s defense was actually very strong for a majority of the game. Both the Weston infield and outfield played well, including Michael Zavala making some great plays at second base. Behind the plate, senior captain Gabe Johnson was a brick wall, stopping nearly everything that came near him.

Credit has to be given to Boston English who was solid defensively throughout the game, making minimal errors and pitching well. Additionally, the Eagles hit extremely well, albeit not against Jorajuria.

Tomorrow, Weston faces Newton South, who are 9-7 on the season, but only 3-6 in the DCL. On the bump tomorrow for Weston is Nicholas Cross, who needs an all-time performance to help bring the win home.
