World Games in Birmingham, Alabama 2022

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The World Games 2022 are being held in Birmingham. This 11-day event starts on July 7th with the Opening Ceremony at Protective Stadium. The World Games-Birmingham 2022 is the 40th anniversary of this unique sporting event. The World Games were established by the International World Games Association, an establishment recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

The World Games host 34 Olympics-style sporting events where athletes from over 100 different countries compete for the gold. Some of the events included; archery, dance-sport, artistic roller-skating, gymnastics, powerlifting, softball, sumo, tug-of-war, sport climbing, lacrosse, and flag football presented by the NFL. Over 3,600 international athletes will be competing at 25 venues across our area. This is estimated to bring an economic impact of over $256 million to our city.

The Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, Boutwell Auditorium, Birmingham CrossPlex, and UAB are the main venues, hosting a combined 23 of the 34 events. However not all the events are located in downtown, Oak Mountain State Park here in Shelby County will host middle distance orienting, marathon canoeing, water skiing and wakeboarding events.

Other venues of interest include Railroad Park which is hosting a duathlon and historic Sloss Furnace which will be hosting dance-sport breakdancing, beach handball, sport climbing and parkour.
