Long Beach brothers learning the value of good sportsmanship

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Coelho family loves playing sports! With a former Division 1 volleyball player for a mom, and a dad who works in the sports industry, it’s no wonder brothers Jackson and Sam are bright and active student-athletes.

Jackson Coelho (10) has been playing baseball for 6 years. Currently, Jackson plays for the ELB Mustang Tigers. He works hard to improve his skills, such as fielding grounders, but always remembers that having fun is important.

“I love that baseball is a fun team sport that teaches you the value of good sportsmanship,” he says. Baseball has taught Jackson leadership, commitment, confidence, and keeping a positive attitude. Even when you make a mistake, “you must accept the mistake, shake it off, and get the next one,” says Jackson. “Mistakes happen and you need to always want to improve.” He looks forward to continuing sports through high school and college.

Like his brother, Sam Coelho (7) is a baseball player, too. Sam is the pitcher for the ELB Pinto Dodgers. He dreams of one day pitching for the LA Dodgers and hitting a home run in the Major Leagues. Sam practices hard to perfect his changeup pitch, and makes sure to keep a positive attitude when things get tough.

“Once I had an inning where I threw some wild pitches,” he remembers. “I had to take deep breaths and think positively to get my head back in the game.”

Both Coelho brothers enjoy sports other than baseball, such as basketball, flag football, and golf. They love spending time with their teammates and friends across all activities. Jackson loves to draw, while Sam loves hanging out with their grandparents’ dog, Daisy. Both boys are great on scooters and bikes. In everything they do, Jackson and Sam remember to live by the advice, “Work hard. Dream big.”
