Rising Collegiate School senior MK Myers going the distance
RICHMOND, Va. — Rising Collegiate senior, MK Myers, gives “going the distance” a whole new meaning.
MK began running during quarantine to pass the time and has grown passionate about the sport for more reasons than one. Between training, breaking personal records (PRs), and representing her school, she has to push herself both physically and mentally every day. MK talks about mental health being one of the most challenging aspects of her sport, and what she does to calm her pre-and post-race nerves:
“When I have a difficult time setting a personal record, so many questions pop into my head. However, understanding that you won’t set a personal record every week and that that’s normal, helps the emotional aspect of a difficult race.”
She also discusses the concept of “confidence,” and what role that plays in her training:
“The biggest piece of advice I received from a coach or mentor is that if you don’t believe that you can do something, you won’t be able to do it. You have to be confident in your ability to succeed, especially in a sport like track, which is such a mental sport.”
While it’s no doubt that MK is serious about being the best she can be, she’s made sure to find a healthy balance of dedication and fun. Off the track, she enjoys cheering on her teammates and participating in their ritual of pasta dinners the night before a meet. She truly loves being part of a team and attributes much of her success to her fellow Cougars.
MK’s number one goal for herself is to push herself to the best of her ability and to end every meet knowing she did the best she could. Be sure to keep up with MK and the entire Collegiate track team to see how they perform next year!
