Young Long Beach area athlete playing with a positive mindset

LONG BEACH, Calif. — At only seven years old, Joshua Sandoval is a true sportsman. Baseball, basketball, football, water polo, soccer, karate, golf—there’s nothing Josh can’t do. And he is always up for a new challenge. “I like challenging myself and being challenged by others to do things that are hard to do,” says Joshua. “I really like to sweat, too!”

He takes his positive attitude into every sport, especially those currently in season, baseball and basketball. This spring will be his second season with the Marlins of Lakewood Village Little League, where he hopes to make the All-Star Select team for the second time, while this is his first season playing with Long Beach National Junior Basketball League’s Bulls.

Joshua knows that sometimes the biggest challenge in sports is not physical. “There is a lot of thinking in baseball,” he explains. “You really need to pay attention, focus, think and act quickly.” It can be a lot, but Joshua has a way to stay focused: “I try to take three deep breaths and concentrate.” Of course, mistakes can happen, but Joshua never lets them distract from his fun. “It’s part of the game,” says Joshua. “When you’re having fun, it’s easier to forget about it.”

Joshua is in first grade at Patrick Henry Dual Immersion Elementary. Outside of school and sports, he loves to draw, play the drums, and hang out with his friends. Many friends are fellow teammates, which is Joshua’s favorite thing about playing sports: “playing with friends and making new friends!” Right now, Joshua just wants to keep playing sports with his friends for as long as he can, but “maybe someday I can play on TV or in a stadium with big scoreboards where people would have to buy a ticket to watch me play. That would be fun!”
