During her high school career, Iris played soccer, volleyball, tennis, basketball, and softball, her favorite being basketball. Recently, she was named All Saints’ Female Athlete of the Year.  Iris has been a longtime member of the Student Council, and, this year, she served as president of the organization. She was also elected vice-president of both the National Honor Society and the Yellow Ribbon Club during her senior year. She was also selected the DAR Good Citizen from ASC.

Iris loves her family very much and enjoys spending time with them, and she also works as a server at her family’s restaurants, Coco Loco and Costela. She also loves her Catholic faith, and her favorite quotation is “I have fought the good fight; I have finished the course; I have kept the faith.” (2Timothy 4-7) She also enjoys exploring new things, watching TV, and reading, and her favorite author is Sara Dessen. Musically, she enjoys One Direction, Bad Bunny, and Drake, and she likes to listen to them before games. In addition, she also enjoys traveling and cleaning!

Iris’s favorite sport to play is basketball. The thing she loves most about the sport is that it is her “thinking and getting away spot.” As she says, “Whenever I am at practice or in a game, the only thing on my mind or that matters in the world is dribbling a basketball, spiking a volleyball, or hitting a softball. That takes my mind off everything, I can be having the worst day ever, but as soon as I get to practice or a game, all my worries are gone.”

Being a member of a team has taught her to work successfully with others, and to realize that it is possible to work with people who may not have the same skills or ideas, adding that being involved in sports has also taught her the meaning of family.

The best advice she has ever been ever given by a coach was when her coach told the team that he didn’t want them to give 110%; he wanted them to give 100% first, explaining that if they gave 100%, there would be no need for 110%. He added that that is how life is and it is important to view life’s difficulties that way, as well.

Iris’s personal goal as an athlete has always been to be a role model for little kids, both on and off the court or field. She achieved yet another goal when she was named All-State in basketball. She does dream of playing basketball in college and competing at a higher level, and this coming fall will find Iris beginning to study for a degree in sports psychology at Central Michigan University.
