Wyoming Valley 5K fundraises towards improvement of Back Mountain Trail

DALLAS, Pa. — More than 400 people turned out for a sold-out 5K on New Year’s Eve to raise money for improvements and expansion to the Back Mt. Trail.

As race director and one of the founders of the 5K, I found the first-year event to be a huge success. It was one of the biggest running events of the year in the Wyoming Valley and attracted talent from all over. The race was won by Daniel Danilovitz, a standout runner at Riverside HS. The first female finisher was Marina Martino, of Dallas, a former star at Misericordia University.

The 5K combined proceeds with another event directed, the Strive Triathlon, to donate $21,073 to ASTA for the Back Mt. Trail, as well as $2000 for the Riverfront Parks Committee in Wilkes Barre. That money will go towards the goal of connecting Luzerne with Edwardsville on the trail, and ultimately linking to the Luzerne County Levee System.

Dozens of local sponsors kicked in to subsidize the event. Primary sponsor Wet Paint Printing + Design donated hooded sweatshirts for each runner. Owner Steve Taren is a former triathlete and loves to support local races.

The race will be run this year in Luzerne on New Year’s Eve 2022, and the plan is to open it up for even more runners. Picture 500 runners going down Main Street in Luzerne with the whole town lit up with vendors and stores open.
