Get to know Fort Loramie boys golf coach, girls softball coach Brad Turner

FORT LORAMIE, Ohio — Athletics are such a cherished part of our community. And behind every great athletic team is a great coach. We are featuring the coach of the Fort Loramie boys golf team: Brad Turner, who is also a teacher and the girl’s softball coach at Fort Loramie. He’s been coaching for quite some time and finds immense joy in mentoring young athletes.

“This next season will be my 15th year. I started coaching in the fall of 2006 and coached for four seasons then took two years away when our third child was born. Then got back into it in the fall of 2013 and have stayed since.” Brad told us.

A former high school golfer himself, Brad’s passion for golf fuels his enthusiasm for coaching the sport. He enjoys the competitive energy that comes with sports as well as the lasting impact they can have on an athlete’s life.

“It’s such an inclusive sport. Anyone can play it and almost anyone can get good at it.  Grandparents can play with their grandkids. Spouses can play together. And it’s really cool when young people start to develop a love for the game.” Brad says when asked what his favorite thing about golf is.

Being a coach comes with a lot of responsibility, which allows for the development of strong relationships.

“I get to know my players pretty well and they get to know me. I’ve done this long enough now where former players are grown men and women with families and careers. It’s awesome to see where they end up.” Brad says.

Another one of his favorite things about coaching is getting to coach with other great people. In addition to golf, Brad also coaches high school girls’ softball at Fort Loramie. His brother, Nick Turner is the assistant coach for the softball team, and his cousin, Erin Turner is the assistant coach on the golf team.

“Getting to coach with two of my best friends is another great part about coaching,” Brad says.

He has coached three teams that have qualified for the state tournament over the years and has enjoyed the immense support from community members displayed through the town escort. It’s truly a very special experience.

Going into the upcoming golf season, Coach Turner is excited to see what his team of talented athletes can do.

“We’re looking to compete at a high level in division three this season. We’ve got 5 lettermen back including three-time SCAL Player of the Year Adam Ballas. Aiden Wehrman is another very talented golfer to help lead the way. I like to think we’re one of two or three favorites in our league and in our area. We’ll be prepped for the sectional and district tournament and hopefully we’ll be in the mix to end our season at the state tournament this year. The guys have been playing well this summer and have been getting after it.”

Coach Turner recognizes that a successful program, such as this one cannot function without the help from many others.

“Arrowhead Golf Course does a tremendous job of supporting high school golf. Kevin Chalk and Randy Clark are incredibly supportive of all the teams that play there.” Brad explains. “We’re lucky to have such a great course and staff to help us.”

He encourages people to come out and support our young golfers this season. They work extremely hard, and would love to showcase their talents to the members of our community. So make sure to check out the golf schedule and come see our golfers this season!
