J.H. Bruns grad Raya Surinx ready to show potential with Manitoba Bisons
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (BVM) — Raya Surinx is ready to dazzle Canada West this fall. The Canadian National Volleyball U21 Team member is a University of Manitoba Bisons incoming recruiting class member for the 2022 season and will make her debut against the Trinity Western Spartans in Langley, B.C., on Oct. 21.
The 17-year-old left side from Winnipeg was the varsity girls MVP of the 2021 MHSAA Provincial Championship and the 2021 Mike Burchuk Female Player of the Year. She also made the 2021 Volleyball Manitoba all-province team and the 2021 Graduating Provincial all-star team. Her accomplishments have not gone unnoticed among high school trainers: she was ranked number one among the female players in the 2021 MHSAA coaches’ poll. Furthermore, this year she was named the 2022 Volleyball Manitoba Club Provincials MVP.
Surinx showed the first clear signs of her potential with the J.H. Bruns Collegiate (Manitoba). According to J.H. Bruns Collegiate coach Kristopher Funk, Surinx’s greatest strength is “her level of competency in games, practices, weight room.” Funk says she is always focused “and this allows her to elevate her game to another level during the most important moments.”
“She is an incredible attacker, she hits with power, but also can hit very difficult angles and is creative with tips and rolls as well,” Funk added. “She anticipates on defence very well and gets a lot of digs.”
At Bruns, Surinx learned how to be a leader and put the team on her shoulders. She learned how to elevate her game in the clutch and make players around her better. This fall she will have the chance to display all those skills before all her western rivals.
