Can Romeo Beckham live up to David Beckham’s soccer legacy?

MIAMI (BVM) – Inter Miami II forward Romeo Beckham, 20, is worth $5 million according to Celebrity Net Worth. But, his wealth in its majority didn’t come from his soccer career. Romeo gained his wealth as a high-end model who rose to fame as the son of former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and legendary footballer David Beckham.

On Sunday, Romeo wrapped up his second professional soccer season. But, is he on the path to living up to his dad’s famous soccer legacy? Well, fans aren’t convinced for a number of reasons.

On Tuesday, the 6-foot-1 soccer player took to Instagram to express his thoughts on how his 2022 season with Inter Miami CF II went. The team (formerly known in 2021 as Fort Lauderdale CF) plays in the MLS Next Pro which is in the third tier of American soccer.

“First full season was full of ups and downs,” Romeo wrote in the Instagram post. “Not the ending we as a team wanted but only lessons learned to take into next year. Love this team and the journey we are on. Vamos Miami.”

His season ended on Sunday when Inter Miami CF II lost 1-0 against the Chicago Fire II in what was the team’s final regular season match. Unfortunately, the team was just four points shy of the last playoff spot and ultimately finished in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Romeo played in 20 games and started in 19 of them this season. He recorded 10 assists and tallied two goals out of 23 scoring attempts and he made 64 percent of his passes. It’s a stark comparison to what he accomplished last season – where he made just six appearances and didn’t record an assist or a goal with the team formerly called Fort Lauderdale CF. The 2021 season was also his pro debut at 19 years old.

To put it in comparison, David made his pro debut back in 1992 at 17 years old with Manchester United. When David was 19, he made his debut in the elite UEFA Champions League and he even scored.

Romeo hasn’t even reached the top tier in the MLS yet, but some could argue that he has his dad’s soccer genes. On July 10, Romeo scored his first-ever professional goal on a free kick. David — who holds the record for the most free kick goals in Premier League history with 18 — congratulated his son in an Instagram post.

“Such a proud moment as my boy,” David wrote on Instagram. “Romeo Beckham scores his first goal with Inter Miami CF II. Great free kick mate, more goals to come.”

Fans in the comment section were quick to write, “Bend it like Beckham” – alluding to Romeo’s ability to make free kicks in a similar fashion to his dad.

Although Romeo is starting to show more skill, it’s often taken away by the fact that he plays for the team that his dad co-owns. Inter Miami CF II is co-owned by David, so many fans wonder if Romeo is actually putting in the work – or is this just a case of a dad buying his child opportunities?

After all, highlights of him on the internet don’t get fans too excited. Comments often mock his inability to make goals and even touch the ball.

But, Romeo is still trying to bounce back from the crucial playing years he missed out on in his late teens. He left the game of soccer altogether and started training in tennis when he was 15. In a video posted on the ATP Tour YouTube page in 2016, David joked with the British press about how Romeo “retired at the old age of 13 from football and now he’s happy (playing tennis).”

He returned to soccer about five years after his absence. If he hadn’t taken that break, maybe today he’d be playing on an MLS team like Miami FC and would be scoring goals like his famous dad.

Overall, the Beckham family has been mostly quiet about Romeo’s future as a professional soccer player. But it looks like he’s here to stay in the game. On Wednesday, Romeo wrote “So nice to be back” in an Instagram post.
