Johnny Manziel now: Texas A&M legendary QB to Netflix docu
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (BVM) – A decade ago, Texas A&M legendary QB Johnny Manziel was the most famous college player in the country. But where is Johnny Football – the 29-year-old who could still be playing in the NFL at this age – now?
A Johnny Manziel Netflix documentary?
In September, Manziel took to Instagram and dropped a tease for an upcoming Netflix documentary. He posted a snippet of his sit-down interview with the caption, “Untold 2023.” Although that clip could just be a part of a different sports documentary, the clip was also teased by Netflix and received countless comments from fans saying they’ve been waiting for a Johnny Manziel documentary.
It’s about time Manziel’s unfiltered thoughts are heard. After all, he is one of the most controversial sports superstars in modern history. From admitting to signing autographs in exchange for more than $30,000 that broke NCAA rules, the infamous Billy Vegas incident, his flopped NFL career, his time from the club to the courtroom, his bipolar diagnosis in 2018 and the big comeback that never happened – fans will have to wait for the official Netflix trailer to find out what this documentary is all about.
Johnny Manziel still makes A&M headlines
Manziel was inducted into the Texas A&M Hall of Fame on September 2, and needless to say, the QB is far from forgotten by Aggies fans.
Manziel joined the Aggies in 2012 and no one can forget the game that made him famous. As a freshman, he led No. 15 Texas A&M to victory over No. 1 Alabama. Manziel also won the 2012 Heisman Trophy and he made additional history as the first freshman in the award’s history to ever win. His monstrous stats have held up all these years later. He holds over 25 freshman and school records, including the most career rushing yards of any A&M quarterback (2,169), and was responsible for a school-record-tying 93 touchdowns (passing and rushing).
This college football season, Manziel is continuously making headlines for his tweets during A&M games. He’s even joked about returning to help the Aggies for the 2022 football season.
“I’ve got 2 years of eligibility left, right?,” Manziel wrote in a tweet after No. 6 Texas A&M lost to Appalachian State at home on September 10.
Johnny Manziel still plays football
Earlier this year, he announced that he was returning for the second season with Fan Controlled Football with the Zappers.
Manziel’s career of course didn’t last long in the NFL as no team dared to sign the QB who was always making headlines for the wrong reasons. The 6-foot quarterback was drafted 22nd overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. He made his first NFL start in Week 15 of his rookie season and ultimately finished the season with no passing touchdowns. For the 2015 season, Manziel was announced as the starting quarterback after Week 10, but he was demoted a week later for lying to the Browns about his partying during the bye week. He was eventually promoted to starter again, but a concussion ended his season. He finished the season with 7 passing touchdowns, over 1500 yards and 5 interceptions. He was let go by the Browns at the start of the 2016 offseason because of a domestic violence incident.
“I didn’t put what I needed to – heart, soul, everything that I did in college – into the NFL,” Manziel said in a YNK Podcast in 2020. “I think I was more enamored with the fame… I think it got to the point where I got so famous, I enjoyed that side of it way more than I enjoyed the work side of it… I’m still trying to figure out what really makes me happy.”
A year after leaving the NFL, he signed with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was later traded to the Montreal Alouettes but was kicked for contractual violations. The CFL also barred him from signing with any other CFL team.
Johnny Manziel’s net worth
Regardless of Manziel’s lack of focus on the game, Celebrity Net Worth estimates that he earned over $100 million in salary and endorsements during his time in the NFL. Today, his net worth is $6 million. Notably, his parents are worth over $50 million as wealthy investors in the oil industry.
Manziel’s story serves as a reminder that there’s a difference between a millionaire and a millionaire mindset. Through it all, by the looks of his Instagram, Manziel continues to live life to the fullest with a tight support system.
